Free description Folken Lakur de Fanel was born in the palace of Fanelia on Purple, 17th Moon (February 17 on our calendar), twenty-five years before the storyline in Escaflowne started. He is the firstborn son of Goau and Varie Fanel, who were then the King and Queen of Fanelia. When he was ten years old, his younger brother, Van Fanel, was born. Being the ?boy who would be king?, it can be assumed that Folken spent most of his childhood training under Vargas. The said training includes swordfighting and hunting skills necessary to slay a dragon. To be crowned King of Fanelia, one must slay an earth dragon and harvest the energist---a spherical rose-colored crystal--- within the dragon. When Folken was fifteen years old, his father died. Folken then set out on the dragon hunt. Folken failed to slay a dragon. The dragon he was hunting down ripped out his right arm. Ready to die, Folken simply lay himself down, ready to be completely devoured by the dragon. However, as his desire to kill the dragon ebbed away, the dragon backed away. Folken then lost consciousness. The Zaibach Empire then took Folken under their wing. Folken awoke to find himself on something similar to an operating table with a bright light glaring above him. Dornkirk was then speaking to Folken, recruiting him to the Zaibach cause. Remembering what had happened previously, Folken hurriedly lifted up his right arm and discovered that it had been replaced by a cybernetic arm. Disgraced for failing to slay a dragon and convinced that he was in debt to the Zaibach Empire for saving his life, he turned his back on Fanelia and joined the Zaibach cause. Believing that only science could save Gaea, Folken immersed himself in the sciences once he joined the Zaibach Empire. He joined the Madoushi, Zaibach's scientists/sorcerers. He eventually developed the Stealth Manteaux, the Zaibach's stealth system used on guymelefs and even floating fortresses. His brilliance was not left unnoticed by Dornkirk, who eventually made Folken a military strategic advisor of the Zaibach Empire. Working under the Zaibach Empire, Folken ordered the retrieval of Escaflowne (which led to the destruction of Fanelia and an Asturian fort). He has also attempted to recruit his brother Van into the Zaibach cause. Using his diplomatic savvy, he convinced King Aston (of Asturia) that his floating fortress, the Vione was unreasonably attacked by Allen Schezar and his men (when in truth they were trying to rescue Van, who was held captive in the Vione). He sent Zonghi, a Deceptant (a race of shapeshifters), to foil Allen and company's plans to warn the Dukedom of Freid of an impending Zaibach attack. When the Dukedom of Freid did fall, Folken was on hand to receive the Key of Atlantis from Freid's Prince Cid. After Zonghi was killed and Dilandau became temporarily incapacitated (read: back to the lab for treatments), Folken sent out two panther sisters, Nariya and Eriya, to retrieve Van and the Escaflowne. Upon receiving Dornkirk's orders to separate Van and Hitomi, Folken then set out to change destiny (with the use of a panther sister and rather creative roleplaying). Destiny is changed a bit, but just to keep Dornkirk happy, Folken conducts some dangerous experiments with Nariya and Eriya to enhance their fortune. As a result, Nariya and Eriya crashed the wedding of Asturia's Princess Millerna and Dryden Fassa, unstoppable with their enhanced fortune. The ?enhanced fortune? came with a price though, as it stopped working and brought extreme stress to the carrier under sunlight. Despite being extremely under the weather to do any more work for the Zaibach until they recovered, Dornkirk ordered Nariya and Eriya to continue their work. In their weakened state, Nariya and Eriya died, crashing down with the Vione after encouraging Folken to save himself. Doubting everything he has done as part of the Zaibach Empire, Folken escaped the doomed Vione and his the Zaibach Empire as well. He joined the alliance against the Zaibach, much to the surprise and suspicions of his brother, Van. Despite Van's suspicions, Folken's intentions to help the alliance were true. In the end, he chose to confront Dornkirk himself in order to really end the chaos started by the Dornkirk's plans. His death came through the tip of his sword, which broke off and fatally wounded him close to his heart after he killed Dornkirk.
