Awful childhood memories and experiences make up most of the way Shinji acts and his relationships with other people. I think Kaworu-kun said it best when he said Shinji was "fragile like glass". After all that's happened to him, anything can affect him ( mostly in all negative ways o_o; ).

He constantly feels alone and like he has nobody, but at the same time he doesn't know how to get close to people, and is scared of getting close to them. He thinks either he will hurt whoever he gets close to, or he will get hurt himself.
